Full-Time Faculty, Mathematics (Lecturer)

Position Summary:
This is a 9-month, full-time, campus-based, faculty position in applied mathematics, with responsibilities for teaching and student advising and mentoring. Teaching responsibilities include 30 contact hours per academic year and additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, participating in assessment activities and curriculum development, and engaging in the life of the department, school, and university. The Lecturer fulfills all responsibilities of a full-time Lecturer as defined in the Stevenson University Policies and the SOS Full-Time Faculty Job Description.

Education/Experience:
Master's degree or higher in mathematics, with preference given to applied mathematicians and statisticians, with experience in and commitment to teaching mathematics courses.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and teaching ability in multiple areas of Mathematics, including statistics and mathematics fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with mathematics technology & software.
  • Ability to create inclusive learning experiences that will help students to develop professionally, intellectually, and socially.
  • Ability to engage in curriculum development, planning, implementation, and assessment of student learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to use pedagogies that enhance student engagement.

Physical Requirements
Medium work: exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Essential Functions:
  • Engage in instructional activity totaling 30 contact hours per academic year as assigned by Academic Program Administrator (APA).
  • Maintain teaching effectiveness by encouraging active student learning, reflecting and responding to student evaluations of teaching, and adjusting teaching strategies per recommendations from classroom observations, supervisor evaluations, and other relevant sources of feedback.
  • Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to, time spent in classroom, laboratory, or other academic setting, and in immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing and regularly updating teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; preparing assignments, grading students' work, and providing feedback to students in a timely manner. Note that all Stevenson University courses require faculty to use the Blackboard Course Management System.
  • Other responsibilities include writing and/or updating syllabi each semester or term; reading and responding to emails; grading course work in a timely fashion; submitting mid-term and final grades, attendance verification, academic alerts, and other reports as requested; and alerting appropriate university personnel to student concerns on a timely basis.
  • Provide feedback to students via assignments, exams, and other forms of learning assessment in a timely manner.
  • Prepare courses and syllabi in accordance with published faculty guidelines.
  • Schedule and hold at least three office hours per week.
  • Evaluate, update, and revise courses regularly.
  • Participate in the assessment activities of the Program, Department, School, and University.
  • Attend meetings and/or workshops related to instruction (e.g., teaching methods, assessment).
  • Implement new teaching methods in existing courses (includes incorporating evidence-based practice).
  • Serve as course coordinator for course(s) as requested.
  • Provide course coordinators and/or Academic Program Administrator with all required course data, as related to course and program assessment and/or accreditation.
  • Evaluate, update, and revise courses regularly and as requested to support student learning.
  • Participate in general curriculum development, assessment, and other departmental activities associated with a full-time university teaching position.
  • Conduct student advising activities including time spent providing students with support, resources, and/or recommendations regarding academic, curricular, career and/or graduate school matters.
  • Engage and participate in the life and work of the program, department, School of the Sciences, and Stevenson University.
  • Attend all Faculty/Staff University, School, and Department meetings.
  • Attend all convocations, including convocation and commencement exercises.
  • Participate in the assessment activities of the Program, Department, School, and University.
  • Engage in continuing professional growth and development activities related to the field, pedagogical best practices, and facilitating student learning.
